Some Tips For Choosing A Penpal Service

Some sites have you pay for unlimited membership for a period of time or forever. Others have you pay per address. Some only give out postal or street addresses. I would not spend the money with a service that gives street addresses. Why? Well people move around, especially young people so how will you know the address is still current?

Street addresses in the Philippines are often far more vague than addresses in the USA! Often they are care of someone else and only people in the big cities are lucky enough to have mail delivered to their address. For many of us we have to go to the post office and check, or hope someone else who was there picked up mail for the Barangay!

Not only that, the Philippine postal service is not the fastest or the most reliable. Employees do steal unfranked stamps off of mail to be posted and they do rifle through incoming letters and parcels for hidden cash or valuables. Things have improved for sure since my husband first wrote to anyone in the Philippines (not me, I was only 8!) but snail mail is unreliable and more importantly..SLOW!

When it comes to choosing a Penpal service, there are a few things to look for.

This is the information age and everyone wants instant gratification. And why not? The Filipina doesnt want to wait weeks to hear from you and you want to start corresponding right away, so why choose a service that doesnt let that happen?

Good Photographs

Good photographs and lots of them, or at least two more views as we rarely look identical in any two photographs taken on different days. Girls should choose the photo they use with great care. With Filipinas many of them simply post a graduation or passport photo! It may be the only one they have. I dont have ay photos of myself or my family before the age of about 16. We didnt have a camera and couldnt have afforded to develop the photos if we had!

Russian girls really know how to present themselves well. They use studio shots more and are better dressed, wear make up well etc. Filipinas are slowly catching up but still the penpal services are full of ho-hum snap shots of girls who look like they just finished washing the carabao!

It isnt a case of what you see is what you get because all women come up better with a scrub and some makeup and the right clothes. They should pay more attention and present themselves at their best, first impressions and all that.

I also like to see two or three photos to show more about the girl. One in casual, clothing, one more formal, a close up and so on. Some sites allow the girls to post several photos, some dont and many of the girls simply dont have the photos to post, or the money to get them taken.

If you see sexy photos, beware! Filipinas are sexy women, very much so. But not publicly. To walk around in sexy outfits like cut off shorts and midriff tops is usually the domain of working girls, burrikats in Visayan. Most girls will dress cleanly and neatly but casually unless they are from well off families. Keep this in mind as the way they are dressed is a good indication of who they are, where they are from, what they do etc.

Detailed Bio’s

A photograph will get a mans attention, but a detailed bio telling something about the girl herself will often sway him to write to her rather than someone else. Unfortunately, you have to consider that many Filipinas may understand English and speak it as well as read and write it, but their composition skills may be lacking.

Religious Persuasion

Often the bio contains irrelevant information and more about hopes and dreams and praising God than anything that would help a man thousands of miles away choose her over others. Filipinas are often very religious and even those who arent feel they have to be follow the trend and praise God or risk not being chosen. Of course some western men shy away from these devout women because they do not share their faith. On the other hand, there are many Christian men looking for faithful, God fearing wives too so perhaps it balances itself out?

Be careful when answering some overly religious posters, especially from non-mainstream orders; marrying her may entail a little more than you bargained for. If she is of the same religion as yourself, then that is a bonus. Although I am a Catholic I am not a practicing one and my husband is an atheist, so for us religion is not an issue.

However, it may be for you and the detailed bio is one place where you can get some indication of what her position is. As you will see from the templates, we dont discuss religion in the first letter but we do bring it up in the next one. Use the detailed bio as a screen: if you want a religious woman then she will let you know how she feels there. If you are not the religious type, dont write off any Filipina just because she mentions God in her bio, many do it out of habit!
